Below you’ll find answers to frequently asked questions about Huachuma. We’ve compiled the most important information to help you prepare.
It depends on your goals, health, and experience. Ayahuasca is an intense, long ceremony, Huachuma is generally described as a gentler daytime experience, and Kambo is a short physical cleanse. Every guest completes an intake interview, and we recommend what fits and tell you honestly if a medicine is unsafe for you.
Ayahuasca is an Amazonian brew taken in a ceremony lasting four hours or longer, usually in an indoor ceremony space. Huachuma (San Pedro) is an Andean cactus, taken in a daytime ceremony where guests often spend time outdoors. Both require medical screening and carry medication interactions.
Ayahuasca ceremonies last four hours or longer, Huachuma ceremonies begin around 10 a.m. and often last well into the evening, and Kambo sessions usually last 20 to 40 minutes.
Ayahuasca comes from the Amazon, made from the Banisteriopsis caapi vine and DMT-containing plants. Huachuma comes from the Andes and is a cactus (Echinopsis pachanoi). Kambo is a secretion from the giant leaf frog (Phyllomedusa bicolor) of the Amazon basin.
Yes. Our Serpent & Condor retreat combines Ayahuasca, Kambo, and Huachuma in nine days, and custom retreats can be designed around your goals or add ceremonies or experiences to one of our other retreat packages. For example another Huachuma ceremony to The Serpent & The Condor or an Ayahuasca ceremony to a Raymi Retreat.
Combining medicines requires medical screening, and we decide with you what is safe.
Start with a free consultation. We ask about your health, medications, and goals, then recommend a retreat that fits. First-timers are welcome, and we explain what to expect before every ceremony.
Below you’ll find answers to frequently asked questions about Huachuma. We’ve compiled the most important information to help you prepare.
Huachuma, also known as San Pedro or Washuma (Echinopsis pachanoi), is a cactus native to the Andes. It is called “The Grandfather Medicine” and “The Cactus of the Four Winds” and has traditionally been used in Andean ceremony.
Guests commonly describe Huachuma as heart-opening and expansive. Themes often include addressing past trauma, connecting with nature, and finding a path toward personal growth. Experiences vary widely from person to person.
Ceremonies typically begin at 10 a.m. with an explanation for new guests and the setting of intentions. After drinking the medicine, guests move into the garden to spend time alone or together, or hike the nearby Temple of the Moon ruins. After a few hours, guests may take a second glass. Many people purge, but many do not. Every ceremony is different.
Huachuma is like a gentle Grandfather. He is open and accepting of nearly everyone. However, there are a few medications and medical conditions that can preclude someone from partaking in the medicine.
Medical Conditions:
Medications that are Counter-Indicative:
When considering partaking of the medicine, please contact us with any questions. The above information is for reference only, and if you feel drinking Huachuma may be a risk we can inform you of that risk. We will ask the questions necessary to assess your ability to drink the medicine safely, please be honest with us and we will find a solution.

Below you’ll find answers to frequently asked questions about Ayahuasca. We’ve compiled the most important information to help you prepare.
Ayahuasca (“vine of the soul” in Quechua) is a traditional Amazonian brew made from the Banisteriopsis caapi vine and DMT-containing plants. It is used in spiritual and healing ceremonies and can produce intense emotional and psychological experiences.
During the Ceremony Participants usually remain seated or lying down. The space may be held in silence at times, and may include music or traditional songs. Skilled facilitators focus on safety, containment, and respectful guidance. Effects can be emotional, somatic, introspective, or sensory.
A ceremony may last 4 hours or longer. Participants are asked to stay in the ceremony space for the entirety of the ceremony, even if they feel no effects. This is non-negotiable and for the participants safety. After the ceremony is over guests may sleep in the ceremony space, or return to their private space.

Below you’ll find answers to frequently asked questions about Kambo. We’ve compiled the most important information to help you prepare.
Kambo, Acate, or “Sapo,” is a substance derived from the skin secretions of the giant leaf frog (Phyllomedusa bicolor), a species native to the Amazon basin. Traditionally used by indigenous cultures for hunting, spiritual cleansing, and as a natural medicine, it is applied topically to small, intentionally lightly burned skin. Only the top layer of skin is removed by burning, there should be no bleeding when done correctly.
During a ceremony, a small amount of Kambo secretion is applied to the skin via superficial burns. The medicine is immediately absorbed by the lymphatic system. This can cause physical reactions such as sweating, vomiting, or an increased heart rate. These cleansing reactions help release toxins and restore balance to the body. Our ceremonies are always led by experienced practitioners who guide you through the process.
Kambo is known for its physical detoxification, immune system strengthening, and support for emotional and spiritual healing. Kambo is known for a wide range of benefits, including:
Although effects vary from person to person, many people experience a deep sense of renewal and strength after a ceremony. Guests commonly report feeling renewed, clear, and lighter afterward. Traditionally, Kambo is used for physical and spiritual cleansing. Individual experiences vary, and Kambo is not a substitute for medical care.
Kambo is safe when performed by experienced and well-trained practitioners. At Mountain Wind, we follow strict safety protocols and each ceremony is tailored to the individual needs and health of the participant. Before a ceremony, we always ask about your medical history and provide clear instructions to ensure your safety.
At Mountain Wind we apply Kambo with the utmost care possible. We monitor vitals with a blood pressure cuff, Spo2 monitor, and use NOLS WFR notation to hand off care in cases of extended syncope or adverse reactions. Consult us for our emergency medical response plan for more information.
Good preparation is essential for a safe and effective experience. Here are some tips:
Fasting before the ceremony and avoiding alcohol and heavy foods is recommended, as well as mental and emotional preparation
During the ceremony you will usually experience a short, intense physical reaction, such as nausea or sweating, followed by a feeling of cleansing.
During the ceremony you can expect physical reactions such as:
These reactions are part of the cleansing process. After the ceremony, many people experience a sense of clarity, peace, and energy.
A Kambo session usually lasts between 20 and 40 minutes, depending on the body’s response.
Temporary side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or weakness. These effects usually disappear within a few hours.
This varies from person to person. Some do it monthly, while others have multiple sessions in a short period for deeper cleansing.
The frequency depends on your intention and goals.
We recommend 72 hours between application for most guests. However this is a guideline that is sometimes appropriate to bypass. Mountain Wind also recommends that you do not receive Kambo within 72 hours of arriving a altitude to be sure you are completely acclimatized to the altitude.
Some people choose a cleansing protocol of three sessions within a month, while others use Kambo occasionally. We’re happy to advise you on what’s best for your situation.
No. While Kambo is safe for many people, there are certain contraindications where we advise against participation, such as:
We always first discuss your health condition in an intake interview to determine whether Kambo is suitable for you.
Kambo is not recommended for people with certain health conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, low blood pressure, or pregnancy.
The nearest hospital to the mountain house is EsSalud National Hospital “Adolfo Guevara Velasco” in Cusco and it is a 16 minute drive from the center. There is emergency transportation on site 24 hours a day.
Near the jungle lodge in Manu is “POSTA MEDICA SALVACION MANU ESSALUD,” 57 minutes away from the lodge. Transportation is available for emergency cases 24 hours a day.
Our emergency plan is based on NOLS WFR best practices and divides situations into cases of evacuation or monitored care. An NOLS certified WFR is present at all times on every retreat and is required to have a well stocked first aid kit to handle any situation.
Every guest completes an onboarding interview, usually by WhatsApp or Telegram video call, and submits our intake form covering health history, medications, and why you want to participate. Mountain Wind works with medical professionals in special cases. If a medicine is not safe for you, we will tell you honestly and discuss alternatives. If for any reason you are denied and have already submitted a deposit of some kind (for example through Retreat.Guru or AyaAdvisor) a full refund will be issued immediately.
Never stop or change prescribed medication without your doctor’s advice. Many medications, including antidepressants, stimulants, and blood pressure drugs, can interact dangerously with Ayahuasca and Huachuma. Tell us everything you take during intake, and speak with your physician before making any changes.
The answer depends on availability and speciality. We work with dozens of qualified ceremony leaders, ayahuasceros, huachumeros, and plant medicine professionals.
At the mountain house we work with Lesley Myburg. She has more than 30 years of operating her own center and serving huachuma. She has trained with and studied local huachumero Dr. Ruben Orellana.
When working with Ayahuasca we work with Alonso Gaitan and Flor Araceli Diaz. They have a decade of experience working with and guiding others in their individual practices. They have studied with many masters across many traditions, consult our About Us page to find more information.
Additionally we work with Borka Cafuk and John Moore when they are available to travel from the jungle. Borka and John have their own center Yana Puma and have been serving guests for more than a decade.
Finally we may also work with Shipiba Lidia Cordova when she is available. Lidia comes from a long family history of Shipibo curanderos. She has worked with foreigners and has a rich understanding of the medicine.
More curanderos, vegetalistas, huachumeros, ayahuasceros, and plant medicine specialists may be added at any moment. We use a rigorous screening process before working with them to verify their qualifications.
Our guest to facilitator ratio never exceeds 1 facilitator to 6 guests and often is much closer to 1 facilitator to 3 guests.
Difficult moments are a normal part of plant medicine, and facilitators focus on safety, containment, and support. For Ayahuasca, guests stay in the ceremony space for the entire ceremony, even if they feel no effects, for their own safety. Huachuma ceremonies are more open: guests can sit together, apart, or walk the nearby grounds.
Yes. Our Serpent & Condor retreat combines two Ayahuasca ceremonies, two Kambo sessions, and one Huachuma ceremony over nine days. Our Raymi retreats also has scheduled optional Kambo sessions.
Depending on your medical intake and contraindications we may separate the Kambo from other ceremonies by as much as 24 hours to ensure safety.
First-timers are welcome. Every guest completes an intake call, and new guests receive a full explanation of what to expect before each ceremony. Participation in any Ayahuasca or Huachuma ceremony is generally not permitted for anyone under 18. This age limit also applies to Kambo Sessions. Guests under the age of 18 can still participate in tours and could possibly receive a non-ceremony discount depending on the activities that they want to experience while others are in ceremony.
Recommended: We encourage all participants to be over the age of 25. We find this produces the best results. However this is not a hard and fast rule depending on the client.
The Raymi are traditional Andean festivals that follow the sun’s yearly cycle: Pawkar Raymi (March equinox), Inti Raymi (June solstice), Killa Raymi (September equinox), and Quapaq Raymi (December solstice). Our Huachuma retreats are timed to these dates so guests experience the medicine alongside the seasonal rhythms of the Andes. [CONFIRM: add one sentence on how you honor each festival.]
Mountain Wind is just recently started by its founder Shane Parks. However Shane has been hosting retreaOur Inti Raymi retreat runs June 17 to 27, 2027 (11 days, 10 nights), and includes four Huachuma ceremonies and entrance to the festival. The official Init Raymi festival is on June 24th, 2027. Tickets to the demonstration at Sacsayhuaman are not included in our retreat prices because tickets are difficult to obtain and must be requested months in advance. if you would like to attend this demonstration please contact us 3 months in advance and we can assure you of the best possible vantage point to watch this unique reenactment.
It is our longest Raymi retreat at 11 days, includes four Huachuma ceremonies and festival entrance, and demand for Inti Raymi is high, which raises costs. Our other Raymi retreats run 9 days and 8 nights.
Yes, Kambo is optional and not required at any point. Additional optional Kambo sessions are also available at no charge.
Please let us know in advance if you want multiple sessions so we can ensure enough medicine is available for all participants.
This depends heavily on the family that hosts us. Before we can give a definitive answer you must contact us for the screening process. We can answer this question before you finalize your booking with us.
A despacho is a traditional Andean offering to Pachamama (Mother Earth). Participants prepare a bundle of symbolic items such as coca leaves, flowers, and grains with prayers of gratitude, then give it back to the earth. The despacho ceremony will happen after our final ceremony and depending on the availability of our Q’ero shaman.
Rooms with private bathrooms are available on request at an additional fee. The price depends on the room requested.
Couples or travelling partners can share a room if they like. The rooms are spacious and comfortable enough to accommodate two people. Rooms with shared bathrooms are included in the price, all bathrooms are close to your sleeping quarters. Pictures are available in the individual retreat information pages.
The Serpent & The Condor is Mountain Wind’s guided nine-day journey from the Amazon jungle to the Andes mountains of Peru. Guests experience Ayahuasca and Kambo in the Manu Reserve jungle and Huachuma in the mountains near Cusco’s Temple of the Moon, with transport, food, lodging, and medicines arranged by Mountain Wind.
The retreat lasts nine days and includes three Ayahuasca ceremonies, one Kambo session with optional sessions available by request, and one Huachuma ceremony.
The journey begins in the Manu Reserve in the Peruvian Amazon, where Ayahuasca and Kambo ceremonies are held, and continues to the Andes mountains near the Temple of the Moon in Cusco, where the Huachuma ceremony takes place.
The name represents the two worlds of the journey: the Amazon jungle and the Andes mountains. In common imagery The Serpent represents the anaconda and Ayahuasca. The Condor represents Huachuma it’s connection the mountains.
Mountain Wind arranges all transport, food, lodging, and medicines during the retreat, with no hidden costs while you are with us. Guests arrange their own international flight to Cusco and are advised to carry travel insurance. The only things not included are personal items, souvenirs and any optional restaurant visits.
Current pricing is available on the retreats dedicated page. The prices may adjust based on exchange rate or other uncontrollable factors. However, once you have booked with us and completed your booking process the price is locked in and will not increase.
The deposit is 50% of the listed price and must be sent to confirm your reservation. The remainder is due on arrival and preferred to be paid in cash although other options are available by request.
Dates are listed on the individual retreat pages. We schedule these unique plant medicine adventures in April, May, October and November every year based on availability of our partners.
We may schedule a custom departure and tour on the same schedule by request.
Each medicine comes from a different landscape. Ayahuasca is an Amazonian brew, Kambo comes from a frog native to the Amazon basin, and Huachuma (San Pedro) is a cactus native to the Andes. The retreat brings guests to each medicine’s home environment.
Instead of staying in one place, guests travel from the jungle to the mountains, experiencing different landscapes and medicines in one journey. It is designed for guests who want adventure and variety alongside ceremony. Mountain Wind handles all logistics and keeps safety at the center.
The Serpent & The Condor is an excellent introduction to plant medicine. Every guest completes a screening interview and intake form, and facilitators explain what to expect before each ceremony. Because the retreat combines three medicines, we review your health history carefully and will tell you honestly if a different retreat is a better fit.
Combining medicines requires careful screening, because each has its own health risks and medication interactions. Every guest completes an intake interview, and we decline or adjust participation if a medicine is unsafe for you.
Many plant medicine experts combine all of these medicines in their retreats. In particular Huachuma and Ayahuasca work exceptionally well in short time frames. Kambo additionally helps in cleansing and preparing the body to receive medicines.
Guests should expect travel between jungle and high-altitude locations, warm and humid conditions in the Amazon, and cold nights in the Andes at around 3,800 meters. The journey itself will not be physically demanding. Hikes are short and over mostly flat ground. Transportation is in private small six seat cars so the drives are comfortable and motion sickness through the mountains is minimized.
If you have mobility limitations let us know so we can make adjustments or advise you on if you can accompany the group on hikes. However in most cases we can accommodate any challenges in this area if given enough notice.
Pack for two climates: layers, a warm jacket, and rain gear for the mountains (about 32 to 75°F), and light clothing, insect repellent, and sun protection for the jungle (about 45 to 85°F). Consult a travel-medicine clinic about vaccinations such as yellow fever well before you travel. See our Travel and Preparation section for more details.
These are the most common asked questions in relation to our Booking Process. If you have a question that is unanswered here, feel free to contact us.
Retreat costs for Custom Retreats are so variable in price there is no way to clearly answer this question without knowing more about what you are looking for. Tickets for attractions like Macchu Picchu can be hard to obtain and the closer to your desired date the more expensive they become. Prices of fuel for transportation fluctuate greatly and can affect this cost as well. These are only two of the many variables among many.
Our Custom Retreat form is designed to gather this information efficiently and submit it to our team for review and pricing.
We have set this minimum to ensure a quality experience. At least a day is needed for acclimitization before participating in any activities. A day for ceremony. Followed by another day for observation after the ceremony. Another day for departure organization. This is already 4 days. Our Custom retreats are designed to pair a ceremony with an attraction at a minimum. That is why we choose a 5 day minimum.
Absolutely. If we include Macchu Picchu added onto a retreat or in a custom retreat we include tickets, transportation, and any additional accommodations you might need to experience Macchu Picchu in the best possible way.
Yes. This is exactly the purpose of our Custom Retreats options. Customizing a retreat to a guests needs and precisely pricing the retreats for affordability, accommodations, and requests that don’t fit into our retreat packages.
Arrive early to acclimatize, drink plenty of water, eat lightly, rest, and avoid alcohol for your first days. Mild headache and fatigue are common at altitude. Ask your doctor about altitude medication before you travel, especially if you have heart, lung, or blood pressure conditions.
If at the mountain house we have oxygen, over the counter medications, natural supplements, and the staff has 30 years of experience helping guests acclimatize quickly. We have had 80 year old guests and others in varying degrees of health come and work with medicine. In extreme cases we follow NOLS WFR best practices and can descend in altitude and slowly return to help acclimatizations.
Huachuma has no strict diet. Ayahuasca does require dietary restrictions, and Kambo requires fasting from food and caffeine for at least 8 hours beforehand. Avoid alcohol and recreational drugs before any ceremony.
A preparation PDF is available on request in or after your booking process.
Fly into Cusco (CUZ). Send us your flight or hotel details a few weeks before your retreat and we will pick you up at the correct location.
We recommend you arrive a minimum of 12 hours before your retreat begins for best results. Closer arrival times are fine, however we need you to coordinate closely with us to ensure we pick you up and bring you directly to our meeting point.
Pack layers: a warm jacket, thermal base layers, hat and gloves, rain gear, sun protection, sturdy shoes, a water bottle, insect repellent, a flashlight, and comfortable loose clothing for ceremonies.
A PDF on what to bring is included in your booking process. If you have not received it please contact us and we will respond quickly.
Requirements vary, so consult a travel-medicine clinic well before you travel. Yellow fever vaccination is commonly recommended for Amazon regions of Peru.
However in Manu we are still in the high jungle and mosquitoes are extremely rare compared to lower Manu or the Amazon basin. Consult a travel physician for expert advise but our experience says malaria prophylactics and yellow fever vaccinations are only used when an abundance of caution helps the guest feel more secure.
Choose a policy that covers medical care, emergency evacuation from remote areas, and trip cancellation or interruption. Check that it covers high altitude and does not exclude participation in plant medicine ceremonies.

Plant medicine integration is the process of making sense of an Ayahuasca, Huachuma, or Kambo experience and applying its insights to daily life. It usually involves reflection, support, and gradual changes in habits or relationships after a retreat.
Integration helps guests process what they experienced and carry it into everyday life, rather than letting it fade. Returning to routines, work, and relationships can feel difficult after a retreat, and support during that period helps guests stay grounded.
Our integration support is broken down into three categories. Preparation, Post Retreat, Crisis.
Mountain Wind offers all of these included in the price. We only support the psychedelic experience. We are not therapists. As such we offer two preparation and two post retreat integration calls per guest per retreat. However crisis calls are always free and we offer crisis calls to anyone, even if you attended a retreat at another center.
Yes. Integration support is included in every retreat. We also offer integration support for anyone that asks for it at $100 per session.
Integration begins the moment you decide to attend a retreat. This is the process of incorporating a psychedlic experience into your life and there are things you can do to help prepare yourself before your retreat.
During your retreat we will discuss your experience, encourage you to journal, and give you tools to understand what you are experiencing.
After you leave integration moves from theory to practice. Reflecting on your retreat journal, having supporting calls with us, and taking steps to implement the lessons learned in your daily life.
If you ever decide to return to plant medicine for more experiences or deeper lessons, this process you have invested in will prepare you well for even more profound understanding.
There is no fixed timeline. Some guests feel settled within weeks, while others continue integrating for months. It depends on your experience, your circumstances, and the support you have.
Guests often report emotional ups and downs, tiredness, difficulty returning to routine, strong reflections about relationships or work, and feeling disconnected from people who were not there. If distress is persistent or severe, or you feel unsafe, contact a licensed mental health professional or local emergency services.
Helpful practices include journaling, time in nature, gentle movement, regular sleep and meals, creative expression, and talking with trusted people. It is often wise to avoid making major life decisions immediately after a retreat.
No. Integration coaching supports reflection and applying insights, while therapy treats mental health conditions and is provided by licensed professionals. Integration support from Mountain Wind is not a substitute for medical or mental health care.
Shane Parks – The facilitator and owner of Mountain Wind provides the majority of the support. He is a certified integration coach with Out of the Dark Academy and has been providing integration coaching for many years.
Zach Khan – Also provides some integration coaching. He often works with Mountain Wind and provides support to guests who feel connected with him. Zach has also be working with plant medicine and integration support to many years.
Others may also be added here soon. If they are you can rest assured they are qualified, authentic and supportive individuals.
Absolutely. The reason most of our guests seek plant medicine is to add new insights into their daily lives. That is what integration is all about! So please reach out to us by voice or video call. We are excited to get curious about your experience and how you are doing after your retreat with us.
Yes. Tell your doctor or therapist about your retreat and any medicines you took, especially if you take prescription medication. Never restart, stop, or change medication without your doctor’s guidance.
Look for someone with relevant training, clear boundaries, and experience supporting people after plant medicine experiences. Ask about their credentials and approach, and choose someone who respects your health history and encourages professional care when needed.
Another important quality to look for is integrity of support. Integration coaching should not be about selling you another retreat. An Integration Coach should be focused on helping absorb or understand your experience instead of a way of advertising for a specific center or medicine.
Additionally Integration Coaches should not be interpreting your experience for you, or giving you life advice. They should be using guiding questions to help you decode your own experience for yourself.
Finally, be wary of anyone offering Integration support by making promises. No one can tell you what integration will do for you in absolutes. Integration support is about assistance for you to make the changes you wish to make with agency, authenticity, and guided understanding.
Allow time to settle and reflect before another ceremony. Your integration coaching offered through Mountain Wind will never tell you it’s time for another ceremony. You tell us when you think you are ready. Then we will revisit motivation and intention of this decision to help you make an informed decision.
It is important to note, a common challenge for some participants in any psychedelic experience is chasing. After a profound interconnected psychedelic experience, some guests want to run back and experience it again. However good integration coaching will guide you to understanding why you are looking for another experience and help you make your own decision.

Our website costs are listed on the Retreat Center Services page. These prices may be discounted or altered at the discretion of Mountain Wind. Included in our advertised web design packages are license access for Elementor Pro, SEOPress Pro, Hostinger hosting, and domain.
A new Hostinger account is created with a domain at the entry discount, however plugins are bought in bulk licensing packages and remain the property of Mountain Wind for the duration of our agreement.
We can build websites on other hosting services as well if the customer prefers or already has an agreement with a hosting provider. However Mountain Wind must have hPanel access for any site it maintains to facilitate support and design.
SEO (search engine optimization) helps your pages rank in search results like Google. AEO (answer engine optimization) structures your content so AI assistants and answer engines cite you directly. We do both, but no one can guarantee rankings, because search and AI platforms control their own results. We commit to best practices, clear structure, and measurable improvements.
Ownership of site, domain, and hosting once the review process is completed belongs completely to the client. As long as Mountain Wind’s license keys for plugins are active on the site we must retain an account with full administrator access. This also enables us to provide the support included in the website package.
One month before the year one is completed we will advise clients on how to renew their hosting, domain and plugins if they wish to end our agreement together. Or Mountain Wind can continue working together to maintain or add features the client wishes to add.
All terms are negociable and if clients want full control immediately this can be accomplished as well, but may incur purchasing of their own licenses that are not included in the package offered.
